Age Requirements
  • Private lessons are for 7 yrs old to 70+ yrs old! If your child is younger, please consult our Kindermusik programs or discuss with us
  • Voice lessons are for 10 yrs and older due to development of vocal ability & focus. We have vocal groups for younger singers that are a wonderful way to encourage healthy singing. Check out our Middles and Teens pages for more info
  • For group classes, please visit options on our Middles, Teens and Adults pages, depending on your age.

Why can’t my 5-year-old take private lessons? Because we’ve got the best program already in place for them! Kindermusik Musicians is an exceptional, award-winning program where students will learn all the fundamentals to be prepared to take private music lessons, but in an age-appropriate, fun group setting. Our Kindermusik Grads have incredible success in private lessons and are HAPPY making music!

RCM Exam and Kiwanis Festival Info

Our Teachers are able to lead students to prepare for Royal Conservatory Exams on several instruments, including piano, voice, violin and more. These exams are a recognized standard and give lessons a more formal purpose. Exams can be “written” at every playing level, and students showing keen interest in pursuing music are encouraged to begin the process of exams. RCM Exam Prep students must take 45-minute Maestro Lessons (Grade 2-6) or 60-minute Crescendo Lessons (Grade 7-10). Students will also be required to complete required theory/history work over the school year as guided by your teacher. This may involve an online course portion depending on level.

Kiwanis

The Halifax Kiwanis Music Festival is an historical event that Joyful Sounds Music Studio students have been involved with for many years. Piano, Voice, Musical Theatre, Songwriting, Winds and Brass are just some of the classes we have enrolled students to compete in. It is a rigorous opportunity that involves dedicated practice throughout the year, with the competition happening in March and April. Students with strong practice routines at home will be invited to participate in Kiwanis classes. Want to know more? Ask your teacher!

Musical Olympics

At Joyful Sounds Music Studio, we pride ourselves in making music learning fun. We also want our students to strive for working hard with strong practice routines at home.

Every February, we have our annual Musical Olympics competition. Students aim to achieve high practice minutes, work on bonus challenges, and have the opportunity to win big prizes from DQ blizzards to Chromebooks!

It’s a magical fun month and you can see more about previous competitions here. The month ends with a celebration of our Ultimate Musical Olympians – those reaching the highest level of practice throughout the month.

Recitals and Performances

Every student deserves the opportunity to share their passion for music by performing at our annual events. In the Fall, we celebrate with our Holiday Song-a-Thon – a smaller in-house performance opportunity with a festive feel.

Our Spring Year-End Recitals tend to be more formal at a larger venue with our students performing in front of a larger crowd. We always aim to have our students feel comfortable and confident in their presentations.

For our Adult Students, we host in-studio “Adult Nights”, where we encourage adult students to perform, but also recognize that it’s more about connecting and sharing in the music making experience. These nights are always a highlight for our adult students.

We also hold our Annual Gala Awards event. This is where we celebrate students who have reached high levels of achievement throughout the year, and recognize some special award recipients. It’s a special event with lots of applause!
