Age Requirements
-
- Private lessons are for 9 yrs old to 90+ yrs old! If your child is younger, please consult our award-winning Kindermusik programs and our new and exciting Keynotes Piano classes
- For group classes, please visit our fantastic options on our Middles, Teens and Adults pages, depending on your age. Piano classes, guitar classes, rock bands, songwriting and more!
Why can’t my 5-year-old take private lessons? Because we’ve got the best programs already in place for them! Kindermusik & Keynotes are exceptional, award-winning programs where students will learn all the fundamentals to be prepared to take private music lessons, but in an age-appropriate, fun group setting. Our Kindermusik & Keynotes Grads have incredible success in private lessons and are HAPPY making music!

Makeup Policy
- Not well enough to attend your lesson in person, but have enough ability to learn? No problem! We can provide a virtual lesson at your lesson time! Please give our studio notice 2 hours prior to the start of your lesson time so that we are prepared to make the shift.
- When a student needs to miss a lesson due to illness, vacation, etc, please update your attendance via MyMusicStaff or by letting the Front Desk Team know at 902-861-2702 or info@joyfulsounds.ca at your earliest convenience.
- When a student is marked absent, your teacher will receive notification, and during your lesson time, they will prepare a video and/or text lesson for you to work on before your next lesson. If a student is going to be absent for planned consecutive weeks, one video/text lesson will be provided. Your video/text lesson will appear in MyMusicStaff within 24 hours of your regular lesson time.
Missed Lessons (Staff):
- Sometimes our teachers get sick or are performing and need to cancel lessons. In these cases, the family account will have a financial credit created that will apply directly to the next monthly payment.
RCM Exam and Festival Information
Our Teachers are able to lead students to prepare for Royal Conservatory Exams on several instruments, including piano, voice, violin and more. These exams are a recognized standard and give lessons a more formal purpose. Exams can be “written” at every playing level, and students showing keen interest in pursuing music are encouraged to begin the process of exams.
RCM Exam Prep students must take 45-minute Maestro Lessons (Grade 2-6) or 60-minute Crescendo Lessons (Grade 7-10). Students will also be required to complete required theory/history work over the school year as guided by your teacher. This may involve an online course portion depending on level.

Festivals
Joyful Sounds Music Studio students have been involved with certain festivals for many years. Piano, Voice, Musical Theatre, Songwriting, Winds and Brass are just some of the classes we have enrolled students to compete in at previous Kiwanis Music Festivals.
For the 2025-2026 School Year, Joyful Sounds is recommending the 3rd Annual Leanne Music Festival happening right in our community. Kiwanis Music Festival will also continue to be a performing opportunity for students if desired.
Preparing for festivals is a rigorous opportunity that involves dedicated practice throughout the year, with the competition happening in late April/Early May. Students with strong practice routines at home will be encouraged to participate in festival classes. Want to know more? Ask your teacher!

Recitals and Performances
Every student deserves the opportunity to share their passion for music by performing at our annual events, all part of the enrollment experience.
Two Performance Weeks will take place in December & June. December’s performance week will consist of small-group performances held on site at the studio. June’s performance week will have the option of more small-group, or larger recital style off-site sessions. Performances are not mandatory, but strongly encouraged and part of your enrollment.
We always aim to have our students feel comfortable and confident in their presentations.
For our Adult Students, we host “Adult Nights”, where we encourage adult students to perform, but also recognize that it’s more about connecting and sharing in the music making experience. These nights are always a highlight for our adult students.
We also hold our Annual #Sharpies Gala Awards event. This is where we celebrate students who have reached high levels of achievement throughout the year, and recognize some special award recipients, grad students, festival awards and more. It’s a special event with lots of applause!
